Honeydew Melon (Afrikaans:Winterspanspek)

Honeydew melons are low in Sodium, and also very low in Saturated Fats and Cholesterol. Honeydew melons are an excellent source of Vitamin C, and a good source of Vitamin B6, Folate and Potassium.

One cup of honeydew melons provides more than 50% of our daily requirement of vitamin C. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system, thus it fights infections. It keeps your skin firm, your bones and joints strong, detoxifies and protects against heart disease and cancer and turns food into energy.

Vitamin B6 in honeydew melons is essential for brain function, hormone production, as well as digestion and utilisation of protein. Vitamin B6 furthermore helps to control allergic reactions, and is a natural diuretic and anti-depressant.

Folate (the naturally occurring form of folic acid) is important in the development of a baby's brain and nerves during pregnancy- thus an essential fruit to eat for women of childbearing age. It is essential for brain and nerve function, and is further needed for red cell formation.

Potassium assists in blood sugar control, maintains fluid control in the body, relaxes muscles, maintains heart functioning and stimulates the digestive tract.

Honeydew melons have a low kilojoule content and is an excellent food choice in weight control. It contains plenty of water - a honeydew melon can keep you hydrated in the hot South African climate!

Muskmelon (Afrikaans:Spanspek)

Muskmelons are loaded with beneficial nutrients and are high fibre, which helps fill you up. Thus, as a snack for dieters, these melons can't be beat. Muskmelons are juicy and sweet and an excellent substitute for high-kilojoule snacks and desserts. The fruit contains Vitamin A,B,C and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. It contains no saturated fat or cholesterol, thus is safe for cholesterol patients.

This melon is rich in potassium, which can assist in blood pressure control, regulate heart beat, can reduce the possibility of age-related bone loss and prevent the risk of strokes. The high fibre content can provide great relief for those who suffer from constipation. The laxative properties of the muskmelon makes them beneficial for people suffering from insomnia.

Researchers are of the opinion that the combination of Vitamin C ( an antioxidant which prevents heart disease and cancer) and beta-carotene (Vitamin A in muskmelon) can prevent many chronic conditions. Vitamin A is needed for a healthy skin, protects against infections, is an antioxidant and provides protection against many forms of cancer. Vitamin A is also essential for night vision.

Regular consumption of muskmelon juice can help to treat lack of appetite, acidity and urinary tract infections. It relieves tiredness and can help to reduce the heat in the body.
